Running out of clean clothes halfway through a Japan trip? A self-service laundry can help you reuse the clothes already in your bag. The part worth checking first is the machine: washing, drying, and washing plus drying are different choices, even when they share one control panel.
Quick answer: Check your clothing labels, choose the right machine and course, confirm whether detergent is automatic, and read the payment instructions before inserting money. Follow the instructions on that particular machine, then return before the cycle finishes.
This guide covers ordinary travel clothing suitable for machine washing. The featured image and character icons are AI-generated illustrations; the machine panels shown are not operating instructions.
Find a laundry that fits your plans
Start with your accommodation. Ask whether it has self-service washing and drying machines, the access hours, and how payment and detergent work. A hotel “laundry service” may mean handing clothes to staff rather than using a machine yourself, so ask which service is available and when you will get your clothes back.
If you need a nearby laundromat, search a map for コインランドリー (koin randorī) plus your location. Check the store's own information for opening hours and equipment before walking there. Hotel facilities also vary: Toyoko Inn's official FAQ explicitly asks guests to check the individual hotel page.
Bring your clothes and a bag for carrying them back. Bring detergent only if the machine requires your own. Before you go, check the store's payment methods; if paying with coins, bring the denominations the machine accepts. Allow time to wash, transfer clothes if necessary, dry, and collect everything; a wash-only cycle leaves you with wet laundry.
To help plan your time and budget, TOSEI's laundry guide gives one wash-and-dry example: up to 4 kg, 50 minutes, ¥700. That is an example from the guide, not a nationwide rate or a guarantee that every load will be dry in 50 minutes. Check the local course's time and total price, and allow extra time for travel, waiting, and collection.
Match the machine and course to the job
Read the selected course, not just the size of the machine or its photograph. A translation app can help read a sign, but make sure the instructions refer to your machine and selected course.
| Label | Course | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 洗濯 / 洗濯のみ | Wash only | Washes clothes; plan a separate drying step. |
| 乾燥 / 乾燥のみ | Dry only | Dries already-washed clothes; does not wash them. |
| 洗濯乾燥 | Wash + dry | A combined course, if the load and clothes suit it. |
A 洗濯乾燥機 is a washer-dryer, but it may offer separate courses too. Confirm that the course you choose includes both stages if that is what you need. TOSEI's laundry guide explains the different machine types.
Check the capacity for that course and any load line inside the drum. Washing and drying limits can differ: the TOSEI SF-275C, for example, lists 27 kg for washing and 18 kg for drying. Those numbers describe that model, not every laundromat. Do not pack the drum tightly just because the clothes fit.

What if my T-shirts can go in the dryer, but one item cannot?

Keep that item out of the combined wash-and-dry load. Choose a washing method its label permits, and plan a suitable place to dry it separately.
Check clothing labels before choosing heat
Permission to machine wash does not automatically mean permission to tumble dry. On the care label, a circle inside a square is the tumble-drying symbol; a cross through it means do not tumble dry. One dot means low-temperature tumble drying; two dots allow normal-temperature tumble drying. Match those limits to the dryer's instructions rather than assuming that any heat setting is suitable. These symbols are intended for international use, not just Japan.
Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency care-label leaflet explains that the symbols set the maximum permitted treatment. The number in a washing-tub symbol is a maximum washing temperature, not a drying temperature. Bars under the washing tub indicate gentler washing limits; check both temperature and wash action. A hand-wash symbol is not automatic permission to use a laundromat's normal cycle.
Check written instructions on the garment too. Empty pockets and separate items whose care requirements conflict. If you cannot confirm that the machine's cycle and drying temperature suit an item, leave it out and ask the garment maker or a cleaning service. This guide does not cover special washing procedures for shoes, bedding, or delicate coats.
Confirm detergent, payment, and the operating order
Look for 洗剤自動投入: detergent is added automatically. Do not add your own to that machine. Baluko's instructions describe automatic detergent and softener; other equipment may require manual detergent. If you need a particular detergent or no softener, confirm the available settings before paying.
Read the accepted coins or other payment methods and the displayed cost for the course. Do not assume a machine gives change or accepts an overseas card. Baluko's coin-operated machines give no change; some locations also offer other payment systems. If paying at a shared terminal, match the machine number to the drum holding your clothes.
One operator example—not a universal button sequence: Baluko's washer-dryer instructions describe checking the empty drum, using its drum-cleaning function, loading clothes, choosing a course, then paying. The same instructions note exceptions to the drum-cleaning order on some other machines. Never run a drum-cleaning cycle with your clothes inside.
Before you pay, use this short check:
- Is this the correct machine, and is the selected course wash only, dry only, or both?
- Is the load within the selected course's limit, and is detergent already included?
- What order does the posted guide give for loading, choosing the course, paying, and starting?
- Does the machine start automatically after payment, or does the guide tell you to press a start button?
Once started, check that the correct machine is running and note its finish time. If it does not start as expected, contact the posted help number rather than repeatedly adding money.
Finish drying and collect your clothes
With separate machines, transfer the washed clothes to a suitable dryer and pay for that dryer separately. Choose heat that your clothing labels permit, and follow the dryer instructions about loading and any laundry net.
Some dryers sell time in small increments. As one price example, WASH House's service page lists ¥100 for 7–10 minutes on its 14 kg dryers, with variation by store. That is a payment unit, not a promise that a full load will be dry in that time. Read the local rate and check the clothes after the cycle; additional drying may cost extra.
How to extend drying depends on the machine and payment method. Cash controls and an app can work differently. Check the instructions before adding money or buying another cycle; do not assume an app can extend a cycle already running.
Return promptly and collect everything, including small items left in the drum. Follow the store's rules if another customer's completed load is blocking a machine; do not assume you can move it freely. If the rules are unclear, use another suitable empty machine or wait for the clothes to be collected; use the posted contact details if you need help. WASH House's FAQ gives specific rules for its services.

If the display says 30 minutes, can I fit in a sightseeing stop?

Plan from the finish time and your return journey, not just the length of the cycle. Set a reminder early enough to get back, and check closing time before you leave.
Do not force a locked door. For a machine error or missing item, use the store's posted contact details and give the store name or code, machine number, and message on the screen. Baluko's FAQ explains its store-specific contact numbers and store codes. Keep a record of your payment if you need help; immediate refunds or English support are not guaranteed.

A practical first laundry visit
Choose a small load of clothes whose washing and drying instructions you understand. Find a machine that suits that load, confirm detergent and payment, and follow its posted sequence. Leave time to collect the clothes and check they are dry before putting them back in your bag.
